KwangHo Shin (b. 1983, Seoul, South Korea). The exhibition marks his third solo show of his work with UNIX Gallery. This latest series of work features new oil paintings that challenge the notion of identity and interactivity between people. Painting in the new environment of New York City, Shin features new tones and color combinations that directly reflect the artist’s experience with his new surroundings. The result of this is a seductive enigma, an amalgamation of specificity and obscurity, anxiety and humor; all with Shin’s expressive strokes that articulate the eponymous notion of “제목이 없는 존재,” the devoid identity, the ‘untitled being’. Evoking themes of Abstract Expressionism, Shin employs intense and vibrant colors to depict the individualistic expression of emotion and a sense of self. He applies charcoal and oils in thick brushstrokes to distort and exaggerate the subject’s facial features. His technique confronts the viewer with an emotional impact, effecting our understa...

What is the Purpose of Gallery Swarm Salon and Being a Creative Resource

We started in 2010 in Chicago inside a 6000 square foot shared space with a rug company. That's when I meet my now wife Glendy. When we decided to uproot the gallery in Chicago and take a break from events. Moving to South Bend Indiana and diving head first into a creative world we did not know much about. As I normally am, I was calling every creative outlet and me personally being use to callbacks and open dialogue between the galleries and creative community. I felt it was lacking. Maybe it was my straight forward ways. I found myself alone not connected to the close-knit group of creatives in this town. For three years I tried to connect with the creative community in South Bend with little luck. I started and felt that Gallery Swarm Salon was unique in how we function and how we accept creatives and treat them with the respect they deserve. We have changed how we do business online by not taking commission and offer free to moderately cost effective ways to have creatives p...

Our Culture Doesn’t Deal With Art Well

By Tom Hubbard http://tom- hubbard. artistwebsites.com/   https://www.youtube.com/watch? v=-oUSfodI6Hs   Schools consider art an aside from intellectual activity. Once a college major is chosen, course selection becomes more constricted. This constricted view sees imagination as a weakness. Social conversation respects and rewards precision of thought. The professional world rewards “critical thinking.” There is a whole world of emotion beyond this thinking. Think of a joyous moment in your life. It was driven by emotion, not critical thinking.   In evolution, emotion came to early humans long before modern thinking. Emotion drives evolution, then and now, even on a personal level. We find happiness in emotion. Music, movies and literature are industries based on emotion. I think it’s clear that emotion is in play when we choose political candidates. In all of this emotion in popular culture, fine art is a niche, but it’s becoming ...

All About The Art

Inside Culture

There are different kinds of art. You knew that but I’m going to explore an art contrast you may not have considered. If you are reading this you know of one kind of art, the kind in museums and galleries. The word “art “ is in use constantly in newspaper newsrooms. It means photographs, as in, “I need some art for page six.” (This editor is taking the high road or the low road of photojournalism.) The high road is. Photographs can say some things better than words. For example, the news story may say “7,000 starving children.” A photo of one child has more impact. The low road is, “I need some art to break up all the type on the page.” Newspaper photographers compete with words, as a painter may compete with the DJ at an exhibit opening. There’s enough abuse to go around. Let’s look at the strengths of each, by eavesdropping on an artist/photojournalist discussion. Photojournalist:   I’m showing the public major events of the day. Artist:  You are showing the publi...

Whats the Scoop on Galleries by Professor Emeritus, Ohio State University

Artist Portfolio   You are an art lover. You go to art gallery openings and enjoy the social aspect as well as the art on the walls. You may have inherited or were gifted a piece of art. You may have a piece of personally selected art in your living room. But, you seldom come home with a new purchase. You may have a $30,000+ car but are reluctant to lay out $500 for a piece of art. Car dealers are lucky. They can site transportation practicality, while urging you to add $10,000 more for luxury features. All buyers are multiple-motivated by ambiance, persuasion etc. Art buying is unique. It’s difficult for the buyer to summons a hard practical motivation. Car dealers can summons practical and aesthetic arguments. Interpolate some of those car dealer persuasions into selecting art. Consider TRANSFORMATION practicality. What do you want your life to become? Art can enhance your quest. Suppose you go to an author’s book signing. Now fantasize. Everyone is enjoying a s...

Introducing "Love One Another" project

Blog post # 1 By Sibella  Hello artists and lovers of art, my name is Sibella and this is my first blog post with The Gallery Swarm Blog. First, I just wanted to tell you a little bit about myself and then more about my current project.  I was born and raised in Bosnia, a small country in south-eastern Europe, where I received my BA in art and education. I’ve been an artist since childhood days, with quite a long break during the war years (in Bosnia) and then refugee life in Germany and the United States.  Finally after settling in Indiana, I started painting again in 2006. I put a lot of time and effort into studying soft pastels which are one my favorite mediums, but I love to paint in pretty much any medium depending of what kind of ideas develop in my mind. I am also a lover of stained glass, pottery, jewelry making. I write poetry and prose, I love people of different cultures, I am also a great cook and a baker and I try to express all who I am th...
