Van Gogh Beginnings

Van Gogh was born upper middle class at a young age he was serious about drawing. In his early years he worked as and art dealer became depressed which in turn he dove into religion. He spent time as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium where he felt the way to god was to live like the people. As he was training to become a preacher he felt the need to interact, work and live like the common people. Continuing to draw he picked up the brush and created dark paintings of the life of the people he felt the need to be close to.
Potato Eater is one of the first and well known for his early period of painting everyday life.
