Van Gogh Beginnings

Van Gogh was born upper middle class at a young age he was serious about drawing. In his early years he worked as and art dealer became depressed which in turn he dove into religion. He spent time as a Protestant missionary in southern Belgium where he felt the way to god was to live like the people. As he was training to become a preacher he felt the need to interact, work and live like the common people. Continuing to draw he picked up the brush and created dark paintings of the life of the people he felt the need to be close to. The Art of Van Gogh: Did He Only Sell One Painting?

  Image provided by: http://www.picgifs.com/wallpapers/van-gogh/ Many think that Van Gogh only sold one work. That might be true. But I would like to put out there my thoughts on the subject. Vincent did actually sell many works to his brother Theo who worked for a gallery and was a collector of fine art. Theo Van Gogh was indeed Vincent’s biggest patron. He helped Vincent by giving him supplies, food, rent money, love and yes money for his work. This is an exchange of goods for money that benefitted Vincent and could have benefitted Theo as well. If Vincent and Theo were not cut down in the prime of their lives who knows how Vincent’s art and Theo’s collection of it would have impacted the world. Probably, in ways neither could have imagined.
